Mini Charm Star Quilt Tutorial

Short on time and need a quick quilting fix?

Turn to precuts!

I found a Moda watercolour mini charm pack whilst tidying my sewing room this week, (actually I was looking for something else that I couldn’t find – not exactly tidying buuuut I do have some neater piles of stuff now LOL)

I had totally forgotten I had bought a few of these from Lina Patchwork at the British Quilt and Stitch Village show back in 2018/ 2019??  It came wrapped like a little sweetie with 42 1” hexie papers too which was really neat.

Now, I *could* have sat and basted those lovely little squares making them into 42 1” hexies ready for use in a later project, but actually I was itching to do some stitching and make something quick and easy that I could finish in a day.

Dedicated sewing time has been hard to find in recent weeks as I have been homeschooling my two boys (11,12) and to be quite honest, once the “school day” is done, so am I!!!

Whenever I get like this, I turn to my tried and true Charm Star Quilt Pattern.

I first designed and made this quilt waaaaay back in 2010 when I owned my very own little quilt store and it was a great way to show off the fabrics in the latest precuts shipment that arrived.

I don’t have many of my samples left now, but here’s one made with a Moda Tradewinds 5" Charm Pack that usually hangs in our guest room:

And another that I made from a gorgeous rainbow batik 5" charm pack that I picked up from Hannah’s Room in recent years.  Alas, it is still to be quilted but ready and waiting for when another new arrival is due…

"Charm Star" is quick and easy and a perfect project for beginners.

All straight line sewing, very little additional fabrics required and can easily be started and finished in a day!

Here’s how to make your own Charm Star Mini Quilt:

You will need:

  • 1 x Mini Charm Pack (2 ½” squares)(border and star centres)
  • 4 x 2 ½” squares LIGHT (star setting squares)
  • 4 x 3” squares LIGHT (star background)
  • 4 x 3” squares DARK (star points)

I added 2 ½” wide borders to my finished block

  • 2 pieces (2 ½” x 12 ½”) side borders
  • 2 pieces (2 ½” x 16 ½”) top and bottom borders

The Mini size finishes at approx.16” square (perfect for a mini quilt or pillow)

1. Make (8) HST units using 3” squares.  Trim to 2 ½” square.

(Here's a quick refresher for you)

2. Layout your blocks as shown:

And, here's my finished Mini Charm Star Quilt

It's lovely and bright and definitely scratched the "itching to be stitching" feelings I'd had.

Now, it's back to planning the rest of the school week for me!  Thankfully, being a quilter I'm pretty good at fractions - LOL

Until next time,

Happy Stitching!
